"Social Claustrophobia is one of those albums not trying to re-invent the wheel, instead simply seeking to delight from beginning to end. And that it does. Of course, the subtle touches that could only be David Newlyn are what make the album something special. It’s surely Newlyn’s most songwriter-y album, revealing his ability to work on smaller concentrated pieces as well as the more thematic and lofty works we’re used to from him. Although the album’s title suggests a sense of withdrawing from the world, the music has the effect of inspiring connection more than anything else. Many artists working in minimal electronic music create works that inspire introspection, but there is something about Newlyn’s work… it’s never about intellectual exercise, it always seems a genuine invitation to find our inner humanity again and again and again. Is this a subjective reading of the man’s work? Perhaps. But there’s something about the work that seems so personal and so intimate that it invites these kinds of highly personalised responses.
